3 people shot in dispute over dog poop in Yakima neighborhood
June 1st 2018
YAKIMA, Wash. - A dispute between neighbors over dog poop escalated into
violence when one neighbor shot two others and then shot himself during a
standoff with police, officials and witnesses said.
The incident unfolded Wednesday evening near 27th and Englewood Avenues in
Yakima, when a 62-year-old man who lives in the area approached his
neighbors and accused them of allowing their dog to defecate in his yard.
Carl Stone was there when it all happened. He says he and his cousin,
43-year-old Michael Bretches, and 19-year-old Shawna Umphrey were all
outside together when the 62-year-old man began to threaten them with a gun.
“He hurried up and grabbed my cousin by the neck, and then he pointed the
gun towards his neck and he said, ‘Now, you’re gonna die.’ I was gonna try
to do something, and he pointed the gun to me, he said, ‘You do anything, I’m
gonna shoot you,’” said Stone.
He says they all tried to run, but the man opened fire, shooting his cousin
and Shawna Umphrey before retreating back to his home. Shawna was struck
twice.
"He pointed it at her like that, and shot her,” said Shawna's mother, Marcie
Umphrey. She says it was the most traumatizing experience of her life. “I
just broke down, cried hysterically,” said Umphrey.
Neighbors called police, and an hours-long stand-off followed as the
62-year-old neighbor holed up in his home and refused to come out, said Mike
Bastinelli with the Yakima police.
“He was holed up for several hours. We made several attempts to have him
come out. After about an hour and a half, it was decided to call the SWAT
team in,” said Bastinelli.
Around 3 a.m. Thursday, Bastinelli said the SWAT team entered the man's home
and found him with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police say the victims and the suspect are all currently in the hospital.
